Children using mercury to attract the minute gold particles, oblivious to the dangers to their health

Afrikids

Booksellers Carriage committed to give 2½ pence for every parcel sent through our service over a 5 year period to support the work of Afrikids in Northern Ghana.

Our support for "Operation Sunlight" as a principal partner started in 2007, in a project to take 150 children out of the mines and mining process and into schools. Also avoiding a further 450 children working down mines and in the mining process.

Afrikids negotiates and works with the mine owners to highlight and enlighten them about the consequence of using child labour. The children are assisted in returning to school, or if appropriate finding training and apprenticeships, while their families are given financial help and practical support, providing land, goats or guinea fowl. This way they can earn money and a new way of life becomes sustainable without the need to resort to sending their children into mining and processing.

A representative of Booksellers Carriage visited the project in April 2009, daunted at the scale of the task and delighted at the progress already achieved. Our 5 year commitment was from 2007 to 2011, giving over £50000 in that period to Afrikids.
